It’s hard to know what to expect when you walk up the stairs to Tio Cerveceria’s double black glass doors. From the outside you can hear muffled music and plenty of loud voices coming through. Open the door and it’s like a party in someone’s back garden. A long bar stretches down one side, bathed in red light and looking very central American – boxed in, with lots of stools to grab and be served.
From the ceiling above hangs some cheesy decorations with a kind of tropical theme, not too dissimilar to Café Lounge. While it may seem like a happening place, it has a more rowdy feel rather than a cool vibe. Tio’s is fun for a while but after the tenth guy climbs over your back to get out from the bench seating, or someone else bumps you off you seat at the bar, you’ll be wondering if everyone has already worked their way through the vast collection of tequila on offer.
To eat something substantial, you’ll need to change location and there are plenty of options nearby (including Spice I am and Longrain). Tio’s is located just a few doors down from the Hollywood Hotel. From the hotel, head down Foster St, up the half set of stairs on your left and through the black doors.
In brief: Tio's Cerveceria Best things: Free bags of spicy popcorn Don't miss: Huge selection of tequila Ideal for: Small-medium groups, after work drinks Date tip: Front area on the right of the bar, but be warned the entire place gets crowded and noisy. Gripes: Noisy, seems to be a little too similar to Café Lounge with bench seating and oddball kitsch decorations, without the same vibe Rating: 6/10
