Sydney's Best Small Bars

Small Bars: Kings Cross - Potts Point
Legendary in Sydney for its nightlife, bars, booze, restaurants and vice, this is the place Sydney comes to visit late at night when other parts of the city are heading off to bed. With hundreds of venues available for drinking, the government has placed a ban on new liquor licences in the Kings Cross precinct. However, the ban does not cover small bars with capacity for 60 patrons or less (subject to it passing through to law in 2013). Hopefully this will lead to more diversity in Kings Cross, but in the meantime there are a few options to try with the same small bar flavour.

  • Dive Bar
Open until 3am and just down from the Coke sign.
    244-248 William St, Kings Cross

  • KingsXWhisper
Located on the main drag - it's easy to miss. It's open to 2am but get there before midnight.
    97 Darlinghurst Road, Kings Cross

  • Roosevelt
A rare bit of sophistication in the Cross. Make sure you head to the cocktail bar and not the main restaurant
    32 Orwell St, Potts Point

  • LL Wine and Dine
Tucked away down a back street past the main drag, this narrow bar with a 'colourful history' has an intimate feel with the bonus of good food if you're feeling a bit peckish.
    92 Llankelly Place, Potts Point

  • Velluto Champagne & Wine Bar
A dark cosy interior makes you feel welcome: located on the quieter side of the Cross.
    50 Macleay St, Potts Point

  • Gazebo Wine Garden
A small bar that is just a lot bigger.
2 Elizabeth Bay Road, Potts Point

    Nearby

  • Eau De Vie
If you are looking to escape the typical Kings Cross experience of seedy bars, inconsistent door policies and drunken youngsters, Eau de Vie is your saviour: 8/10

  • Hinky Dinks
An inspired bar decorated in 1950s/carnival style and backed by a tempting cocktail menu: 8/10
