Tucked just off the main drag of the Beach, Bondi Hardware nods to its hardware-store past with exposed brick walls, bare floors and industrial lighting. Candles and hanging plants offset this somewhat masculine décor, creating an impressive sense of intimacy in what should be an austere space. The venue is designed for lively socialising, with a large communal table running through the centre of the room, but smaller tables tucked along the sides provide for more secluded catch-ups. The food is hearty yet sophisticated, designed for sharing and served all day around: unlike your standard bar, Bondi Hardware is open from breakfast right through to late night drinks. The menu changes frequently to keep the regulars interested but always has this sharing ethos at its heart, revolving around pizzas, sliders and share-plates. The drinks menu is designed to cater to all tastes, with a ‘Tap of the Month’ beer and a wide selection of wines ranging from $8-$14 by the glass. Bondi Hardware’s cocktails are a treat, fruity but light and often with a surprising mix of flavours – the Long Melon ($17) is particularly delicious and unique, blending vodka with pomegranate liqueur, lime, grapefruit, agave nectar and rhubarb bitters. In keeping with the bar’s commitment to share-friendly dining they offer jugs of Pimms, Punch ($38) and Sangria ($35). Bondi Hardware’s real calling card, however, is the easy-going hospitality of their staff – despite often being overrun by customers, they accommodate every customer’s dietary requirements and drinks preferences and do so with a smile. It’s this service that sees Bondi Hardware full of regulars every night and places it firmly at the top of our list of bars to revisit.
In brief: Bondi HardwareBest things: unpretentious, vibrant atmosphere and share-plate ethos Don't miss: Warm evenings on the street watching twilight descend over urban Bondi beach Ideal for: a boozy and delicious catch up with friends – dig in Date tip: during summer, head out to the back courtyard. During colder months, grab a table by the large front windows to enjoy a spot of people-watching. Gripes: the industrial design and hard surfaces makes it a little too loud on busy nights.
