There's a certain informality about the small bars in Redfern and a feeling that they are part of the local community, rather than just tolerating it. That brings us to The Bearded Tit: named after a songbird and not, as you would presume, a hirsute hipster. In the months leading up to its opening, the bar recruited volunteers on weekends to finish off the space, until it finally opened its doors in August 2014. Following a common theme of part bar, part art space, The Bearded Tit is presented in a casual manner while finding the right balance between engaging and fun, without relying too much on a gimmicky layout.
On the drinks front, three beers are available on tap, including a local Sydney relic: Reschs. A modest collection of wines, including reds, whites and sparkling also hit the spot. Cocktails will set you back about $16-$17. The Not So Old Fashioned, an aged rum based version was a bit disappointing as it appeared hastily made and way too dark ($18).
When it comes to food, The Bearded Tit has taken a novel approach to deal with a tiny kitchen. A few items such as meat pies ($6) are available from the kitchen, but the menu also sports a range of Chinese and pizza options. These are ordered by the bar and delivered from nearby restaurants and re-plated in the kitchen. This results in a wide choice of food that is well presented and quite cheap. It gets back to that theme of being part of a community and it is so simple that it's a surprise that this approach is not more common.
In brief: The Bearded TitBest things: A local bar with a sense of fun. Ideal for: Small groups, catch-ups with friends. Date tip: Dates will be tricky as there is limited secluded space. Try the left side of the bar as you walk in, or the far back area. The booths look nice but you are seated too far from each other. Gripe: Stools located around the bar make it hard to get drink when the place fills up Rating: 6/10
